Kenyan Al-Shabaab Terrorist Sentenced for Plotting “9/11-Style” Attack in Atlanta
 
• Cholo Abdi Abdullah, a 34-year-old Kenyan national and al-Shabaab operative, was sentenced on December 22, 2025, to two consecutive life terms plus lifetime supervised release following his November 2024 conviction on six terrorism-related charges, including conspiring to murder U.S. nationals and commit aircraft piracy.
 
• Abdullah plotted with al-Shabaab to hijack a commercial airliner and carry out a 9/11-style attack targeting U.S. high-rise buildings, including Atlanta’s Bank of America Plaza.
 
• From 2017 to 2019, al-Shabaab funded Abdullah’s pilot training in the Philippines, where he logged flight hours and studied cockpit security, hijacking tactics, and U.S. visa requirements. The plot was disrupted in July 2019 when Philippine authorities arrested Abdullah, who was extradited to the United States in 2020.
 
SCHOOL THREATS
 
Multiple Minnesota Schools Targeted
 
• Several south-metro high schools in Rosemount, Minn., closed on December 16, 2025, as a precaution after social media threats surfaced the previous evening.
 
• The posts, shared around 6:45 p.m. on December 15, showed firearms and included a poll asking “which one first,” naming Apple Valley, Eastview, Rosemount, and Eagan high schools.
 
• Authorities arrested a 16-year-old male later that day following a search in Eagan, though no weapons were recovered.
 
New Mexico Man Arrested After TikTok Threat
 
• Dion Torres, 25, of Las Cruces, N.M., was arrested by the FBI in December 2025 on federal weapons charges after posting a violent threat during a December 17 TikTok livestream stating, “I’m shoot up a school tomorrow time to kill kids.” Although he did not name a specific school, the reference to his past attendance at Las Cruces Public Schools prompted an immediate investigation.
 
• A search of his home uncovered an AR-style rifle, three loaded magazines containing 120 rounds, including armor-piercing ammunition, and wall writings outlining potential attack plans.
 
FBI Thwarts ISIS-Inspired New Year’s Eve Terror Plot in North Carolina
 
Christian Sturdivant, 18, had allegedly planned the attack for about a year, according to US Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Russ Ferguson. Suspect Christian Sturdivant, 18, was arrested on Dec. 31 and charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Russ Ferguson said at a Jan. 2 press conference.
 
Sturdivant appeared in court on Jan. 2.
 
A U.S. citizen, Sturdivant had allegedly planned the attack for about a year, according to Ferguson. The authorities say “It was a very well-planned, thoughtful attack ... that was fortunately foiled here.” The FBI investigation lasted two weeks, said Special Agent in Charge James Barnacle.
 
Sturdivant first came to the FBI’s attention in January 2022 as he was in contact on social media with an identified ISIS member overseas, said Barnacle.
 
The ISIS member instructed him to dress in all black, knock on people’s doors, and attack people with a hammer.
 
Sturdivant dressed in all black and left his house with a hammer, but his family stepped in, Barnacle said.
 
No charges were filed, and Sturdivant was referred for and underwent psychological care—the details of which Barnacle said he did not know.

• A recent investigation by the Middle East Forum documents how Northwestern University in Qatar functions less as an impartial American academic outpost and more as a privileged training ground for Qatar’s royal and elite families.
 
• The investigation found that since 2007, the Qatar Foundation (QF), controlled by the Al-Thani royal family, has poured more than $700 million into Northwestern’s partnership.
 
• According to the report, approximately 21 percent of the graduates between 2014-2025 bear surnames from the Al-Thani royal family or 11 other elite Qatari dynasties. In peak years, such as 2020, elite families comprised up to 35 percent of a graduating class.

**Reported U.S. Operation in Venezuela, Alleged CIA–MSS Coordination, and Resulting Strategic Shock to Iran’s Leadership** - Multiple sources claim that a sequence of covert and overt intelligence events—beginning with a reported CIA–MSS meeting in Thailand and culminating in the alleged U.S. special forces arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro—has triggered a severe crisis of confidence within Iran’s senior leadership. According to these accounts, Iran’s Supreme Leader and key IRGC/intelligence figures have relocated to an undisclosed secure site, fearing abandonment by China and Russia and anticipating intensified foreign-backed destabilization efforts. These narratives, if accurate, suggest a major geopolitical realignment involving the United States, China, and Russia, with downstream effects on Venezuela, Iran, Taiwan, and Ukraine.
 
**U.S. intelligence cyber, surveillance capabilities key to conducting Venezuela mission** - NSA played a pivotal role in the U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, including geolocation support and communications monitoring, according to a U.S. official. In addition, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) provided imagery and mapping data to the mission. In the lead-up to the operation, Maduro's daily routines and movements were tracked closely by intelligence teams. President Donald Trump told a news conference on Saturday that lights in Caracas “were largely turned off due to an expertise that we have.” Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said at the press conference that U.S. Cyber Command's offensive cyber capabilities were involved in the operation.
 
**Intentionally or not, the US's capture of Maduro is a threat to Iran's regime - analysis** - Whether US President Donald Trump and his administration intended or not to add a warning to the Iranian regime as a side effect to Saturday's capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Islamic Regime officials will likely interpret the US military operation as such.
 
Iran, a longtime ally of Venezuela, has been suffering from civil unrest since Sunday amid a dramatically weakening rial, water shortages, and a regime with a weakened image after the 12-day war with the US and Israel. Riots and protests have persisted as the Islamic regime has cracked down, but in response to the security forces' tightening grip, Trump has issued aggressive warnings.
 
"The regime in Iran should pay close attention to what is happening in Venezuela," Yesh Atid leader said on X on Saturday. US's Venezuela op. delivered blow to 'global axis of evil,' sent 'clear message' to Khamenei.
 
Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli also said in a statement that the operation delivered a blow to the "global axis of evil" and sent a "clear message" to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
 
"Maduro did not run a country, he ran a crime and drug empire that directly fueled Hezbollah and Iran," Chikli said Saturday night. "The president's decisive steps have proven once again that strong leaders are the only way to defeat dictators."
 
CUBA
 
** Deaths expose years of covert Cuban involvement in Venezuela's intelligence and military structures.
 
Cuba acknowledged that 32 of its citizens — described by the government as members of the island’s armed forces and intelligence services — were killed during the U.S. operation that seized Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, declaring two days of national mourning in their honor.
 
Havana did not specify where the personnel were stationed during the raid. But their deaths have renewed scrutiny of years of reporting and international investigations documenting Cuba’s deep and covert involvement inside Venezuela’s military and intelligence structures.
 
Jorge Jraissati, a Venezuelan political analyst, said Cuba’s intelligence role was critical to the consolidation of power first under Hugo Chávez and later under Maduro. "Experts usually link Cuba as the most important intelligence provider of Venezuela. This includes issues like running elections, building diplomatic leverage with other countries and keeping the security forces in check, among others.
 
Jraissati said any transition in Venezuela "would require the American government, in partnership with the Venezuelan people, to work together on minimizing the Cubans’ influence over Venezuela’s state apparatus and society at large."
 
A Reuters investigation published in August 2019 found that two confidential agreements signed in 2008 granted Cuba sweeping access to Venezuela’s armed forces and intelligence services.
 
Under those agreements, Cuban officials were authorized to train Venezuelan troops, restructure intelligence agencies and help build an internal surveillance system focused on monitoring Venezuela’s own military, according to the report.
 
Those arrangements played a central role in transforming Venezuela’s military counterintelligence agency — the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM) — into a force designed to detect dissent, instill fear within the ranks and ensure loyalty to the government, the investigation found.
 
The findings were later echoed by the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela, which said it reviewed a 2008 memorandum of understanding between Cuba and Venezuela. The U.N. mission reported that the agreement provided for Cuban advisory oversight in the restructuring of Venezuelan military intelligence, including the creation of new agencies, training of counterintelligence officers and assistance with surveillance and infiltration techniques.
 
Former Venezuelan officials cited by Havana Times and El Toque have described Cuban advisers embedded across some of the country’s most sensitive institutions, including the civilian intelligence service SEBIN, DGCIM, the defense ministry, ports and airports, and Venezuela’s national identification system.
 
Human rights organizations and international investigators say those structures were central to the government’s response to mass protests in 2014 and 2017, when Venezuelan security forces carried out widespread arrests and deadly crackdowns on demonstrators.
 
The U.N. fact-finding mission documented patterns of extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detention and torture, and reported that Cuban advisers helped train Venezuelan personnel in methods used to track, interrogate and repress political opponents.
Experts say Cuba’s admission that its military and intelligence personnel were killed during a U.S. operation inside Venezuela has sharpened focus on the alliance’s true depth, turning years of documentation into an immediate geopolitical issue.
 
**Circling back to Russia and China in Cuba
 
Russia and China both operate signals intelligence (SIGINT) facilities in Cuba, serving as key listening posts near the U.S., with historical Russian operations at the massive Lourdes site (now largely defunct/repurposed) and recent significant Chinese expansion and upgrades, particularly at Bejucal, for long-range surveillance, including new antenna arrays to monitor U.S. military and commercial communications.
 
Russian Operations:
 
• Lourdes Site: The huge Lourdes facility near Havana was the largest Russian SIGINT base outside the Soviet Union, operational from the 1960s to 2002, collecting vast amounts of U.S. data.
 
• Revival? While officially closed, some reports suggest Russia may still conduct covert electronic intelligence operations, potentially using disguised personnel.
 
Chinese Operations:
 
• Strategic Expansion: China has built and upgraded several SIGINT sites, filling the intelligence void left by the Soviets, with facilities near Havana (Bejucal, Wajay, Calabazar) and El Salao.
 
• Key Sites & Upgrades:
 
Bejucal: The largest active site, undergoing significant upgrades with new Circularly Disposed Antenna Arrays (CDAAs) for sophisticated surveillance.
 
Wajay & Calabazar:
